The 46th Annual Meeting held in Xiamen from August 27 to September 1 was a highlight of 1995 for the International Society of Electrochemistry. It was the first time for the ISE Annual Meeting held in a country of the Asian continent, and the result was significant. The main theme of the Meeting is 'progress of electrochemical science and technology'. More than 800 participants (more than 500 from abroad) had been welcome by the Chinese hosts. The local government offered a new conference center which proved to be very appropriate.
The opening section with plenary lectures by R.A.Marcus, A. J. Bard and G. Ertl was an excellent introduction. Then the meeting went on with 8 Divisional meetings including 426 lectures and 486 posters. It is worthy to emphasis the first symposium "Special Symposium: Atomic and Molecular Level Perspectives in Interfacial Electrochemistry" which was organized by Divisions 1 and 4. Symposium discussions were organized by the DOs and combined with the division member meetings. The poster sessions were another successful feature of the meeting, and they were remarkable for the high attendance numbers and the extent and quality of discussion.
During the meeting, LOC has arranged for about 180 participants to visit the Key Laboratory of Solid Surface of Physical Chemistry of Xiamen University and impressed many of the participants with its advanced instruments, the active young researchers and the stimulating atmosphere. The Special ISE Events, such as the General Assembly with the dedication of the honorary membership to R. A. Marcus and the Award Session with the lecture presented by M. Armand, have been attended by about 300 participants.
The social program full of Chinese feature attracted almost all the participants. At culture night, the brilliant performance by dancers, artists and musicians with the strong flavor of Xiamen island culture was the most enjoyed activity. The excursion to Gulangyu islet, including the cruise, walking through the parks and streets and climbing up the mountain, impressed the participants a wonderful view over Xiamen.
Local Organizing Committee consists of twenty-six famous electrochemists from China and the neighboring countries and regions in Asia-Oceanic area and the officers from Xiamen municipal government as well as from Xiamen University. The Scientific Committee consists of 27 distinguished electrochemists all over world. In spite of the limited funds from its budget, LOC decided to reduce the registration fee to its minimum and to offer financial support to those who intended to come but suffered the financial difficulties. In order that Chinese electrochemists have more chance to get involved in international academic exchanges, keeping themselves well informed and broadening their views, the 8th National Conference on Electrochemistry was held at the same time in Xiamen University from 26, August, 1995 to 1, September, 1995. Meanwhile, an Advanced Course on Electrochemistry was also held in Xiamen University from 22, August, 1995 to 14, September, 1995.
There is one point which should be emphasized here. The municipal government of Xiamen city and Xiamen University have provided full support to the work of LOC by organizing a working group under the direct control of municipal government to coordinate works between different departments, ensuring the smooth proceedings of works related to the meeting. In a word, the meeting is the most productive and stimulating, and its success are demonstrated by many commentary letters of the participants' we received after the meeting.
